BACON DEODORANT

It was bound to happen. Bacon deodorant is a new item that has a welcome place in my arsenal of personnel hygiene items. Yes, it does smell like bacon. I would like to share what is said about the product with the accompanied literature.

"Using PowerBacon will probably make everyone drawn to you like you were the most powerful magnet on Earth And by everyone, we mean friends, acquaintances, beautiful strangers, dogs, bears, swamp alligators , lions and even pigs. Use your new power wisely because with great bacon power comes great baconsiblility."

PASS THE PIGS

During our BBQ  judging process there can be a little down time. This is usually the time after the judges meeting and before the first entry turn-in. We have a fun little way to pass the time. We break out an old/new game called 'Pass The Pigs'. It is similar to a dice game but played with plastic oinkers. You roll out the little pigs and score points by the way they land. The first person to one hundred is victorious. The pigs below have a point value of 16. The first pig is a 'Leaning Jowler' (15) and the second is a 'Side' (1). Making pig noises during play is optional.

CHILEBROWN MEETS THE GOAT SUCKER

Be forewarned, you will now experience a typical day in the life of Chilebrown. I have met and conquered El Chupacabra (The Goat Sucker). When I am not judging BBQ competitions, managing farmers markets, searching for the ultimate Chile-Verde and local butcher shops, hot sauces are my passion. Yes, I admit that one of my favorite hangouts is ‘Heat Hot Sauce Shop’ of Berkeley California. Let’s start from the beginning. CaJohn’s is a manufacture of high quality hot sauces. I was a recipient of a free hot sauce from a giveaway on Facebook. This particular sauce is considered a super ultra-hot, non extract elixir. This sauce is not for the hot sauce challenged. I was a little apprehensive and possibly a little afraid of this heat bomb. In the next several moments we are going to meet the sauce, the tasters and tell you how it tasted. Please, continue reading at your own risk.

The Sauce

A journey into the unknown and unexplained tells us of a beast that devours and mutilates livestock. This is the legendary El Chupacabra. El Chupacabra hot sauce like the beast, may cause harm to us after ingesting this potent line up of super hot Caribbean chile’s.  An all-star exotic line up of Bhut Jolokia, Scotch Bonnet, Trinidad Scorpion, 7-Pot, Trinidad Scorpion Moruga peppers is putting fear into me now. There are also carrots, onion, mustard, vinegar and spices to tame this bevy of peppers. This may be one of the hottest sauces (non extract) on the market today

The Tasters

Dylan & Becky are owners of the newly opened hot sauce shop “Heat”. They have a great shop that has an extensive inventory of wonderful hot sauces. They even bottle and sell three sauces of their own. Dylan & Becky are more than willing to open a hot sauce bottle to sample and taste. These two have knowledge and fortitude to share this bottle of El Chupacabra. I trust that they can handle the heat of this formidable hot sauce. Ms. Goofy did not want any part of this experiment. I was having a few reservations myself. This would be a serious tasting. A bottle of milk was purchased just in case. Drinking dairy can sooth and calm the burning sensation. Dylan, Becky and I were ready to try El Chupacabra.

Taste

The sauce is an inviting red/orange thick smooth puree. No seeds are present. The top was ceremoniously removed. Pure hot exotic pepper aroma filled the shop and instilled fear into my mind. It is time to meet El Chupacabra. We pour cautiously into our tasting spoons. We glanced at each other. I made sure the milk was handy and ready. I taste fruity hot peppers, Dylan tastes mustard, and Becky is feeling a little dizzy. These are our initial thoughts and feelings. The second wave and experience is the heat building in your mouth. Did I just swallow a live hot coal? That is an exaggeration but it is a heat that puts your endorphins into overdrive. Dylan and I both had sinus reactions that put the Kleenex to use. Becky was fine with a couple of sips of coffee.

When the fire subsided, we all agreed that this sauce did have great appeal. The peppers did have a Caribbean flair with its mustard, carrots and onions singing backup. You cannot ignore the heat. It is there and needs to be respected. We are professionals. (Did I really just say that?) CaJohn’s has a unique and very special sauce with El Chupacabra. This sauce will make any serious Chilehead happy. I am glad I was able to share it with Dylan, Becky and You the readers. We have conquered El Chuacabra!!!!!!!!

MASTER JUDGE ACCESSORIES

One must dress for success. Professionals, craftsmen and barbeque competitors all wear appropriate clothes for their field. I wear a custom 'Master Judge' shirt when I perform BBQ judging duties. It was time to accessorize my judging attire. Behold the latest Chilebrown '1977 Limited Edition Kingsford Belt Buckle". This paticular buckle is numbered 282 out of only 1000 made. The next competition you will see this judge strutting in style.

SQUIRTING FLOWERS & WHOOPEE CUSHIONS

This weekend was spent in Fresno at the ‘Small Farm Conference’. This convention was not all squirting flowers & whoopee cushions. We heard all about small farms and relations with producers, consumers, etc. There were discussions about managing farmers markets. We toured several small farms and distribution centers. It was a great opportunity to meet and greet movers and shakers in the industry. This event was informative and fun. I did have a chance to have several great meals in the Fresno area.

QN4U was a destination BBQ restaurant located in the suburb of Clovis. I have dined there several times. My last visit I got to talk and visit with the owner Brent Walton. Unfortunately Brent has passed and QN4U is no longer open. I drove by and it was in the process of becoming an Indian restaurant. I was a little sad until I came upon this stoplight in downtown Clovis. There was a cowboy at the intersection doing rope tricks. I fumbled with my camera and managed to grab this shot. The cowboy must of have heard the shutter because he said; “Did yawl jus take my picture?” I laughed and said; ‘No’. He laughed and did some more tricks.

The concierge at the convention hotel suggested the “Elbow Room” as one of the best steak houses in Fresno. They even had a free shuttle to this house of beef. Say no more. I put on my best squirting flower on and packed my whoopee cushion, it was time for beef.  A twenty two ounce corn fed USDA prime bone-in rib-eye to be exact. This was meat that I crave. The Elbow room did not disappoint.

Our friends at ‘Yelp’ suggested Oaxaca as a good breakfast destination. The description suggested the neighborhood was colorful and the food authentic. This was my kind of place. It was the best seven dollars including tip that I have ever spent on breakfast. Fresh home made tortillas, farm fresh eggs; all bathed in spicy chile sauce was comfort food that fueled my day. I wanted to return for lunch and try the chile verde but the conference called.

This was a fun, informative and tasty weekend. Thanks for sharing it with me.

CUSTOM WSM

Harry Soo of 'Slap Yo' Daddy' barbeque team received a very nice gift from his fiance Donna Fong. She took a stock Weber Smoky Mountain cooker and had it custom painted. Very realistic lit charcoals with flames burning high are painted on this WSM . This cooker is hot. This is the ultimate gift in my book. (hint). Harry Soo will be cooking with his new custom rig at the 'Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational Barbeque' on Oct 27, 2012. Good luck Harry!

HOT DOG EATING CONTEST

It is only eight days away to the 4th of July. That also means it is only eight days to see if Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut will retain the coveted 'Mustard Belt'. This championship belt is awarded for eating the most hot dogs in a 10 minute period. Joey holds the World Record for consuming 62 hot dogs in this time frame. Needless to say this is a gastronomical feat that is extraordinaire. We will be rooting for our hero and champion Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut. I just wanted to give everybody a heads up that the event has a new time. Traditionally the event was held at 12 noon EST. It has been moved to 300pm EST. I think we will serve hot dogs during the event

FLOSSIE’S CORN DOG MIX

Ms. Goofy had a hankerin for corndogs. The county fair circuit does not start for several more months. We had to fill this corny desire for the ‘big dog’ of the Mad Meat Genius household. While in Las Vegas, we went shopping at the only store I actually like to shop at, ‘Bass Pro Shop’. This huge store has everything a man needs or wants for the outdoors. They also happen to sell ‘Flossie’s’ corn dog mix. Sticks are included and all you do is add water. This was perfect to inspire and fill Ms. Goofy’s corn dog wish.

Skewer your hot dog with the included stick and dip in batter. Heat the oil to 375 degrees and cook until golden brown. Four minutes later it is the county fair in our kitchen. I did throw in a couple of mushrooms into this corny batter. The corn dogs were just as you can imagine. This batter was on the sweet side. Flossie’s filled a need and delivered.

ROASTED PEANUTS

Have you ever had freshly roasted peanuts? They are a treat. Roasting nuts creates a more intense, warm nutty flavor. Browsing the Richmond Farmers Market we found some raw peanuts. These peanuts were fresh and a little damp. The farmer suggested letting the peanuts air dry for several days before roasting. We purchased a pound for two dollars and set them out on a newspaper to dry. Several days later the dampness was gone and it was time to roast. The nuts still in their shell were place on a baking sheet. They were placed in a 350 degree oven for approximately 20 minutes. The last 5 minutes you need to check your nuts to avoid over roasting. Sprinkle with salt while still hot. These peanuts were addicting. Give me a cold one and 'Take me out to the Ballgame"

BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving is the traditional day to kick off the Christmas shopping season. Numerous stores advertise ‘Doorbuster’ sale items to lure bargain driven customers. Mayhem and disorder sometimes is the result of this shopping frenzy. I have never even got off the couch to participate on this unofficial shopping day. Who in their right mind would rise at the crack of dawn to do battle at a shopping mall? This year things were different. Ms. Goofy mentioned Home Depot had a great Doorbuster deal on some bamboo cutting boards.

I set the alarm for 500 a.m. to make a turkey and stuffing sandwich for breakfast. Since I was up I decided to venture out into the masses of desperate shoppers at the Home Depot. I miraculously survived and returned home with the boards and an additional head lamp. This image shows the head lamp with the optional beer helmet accessory. This will be perfect to illuminate our barbeque in case of natural disaster and possible loss of electrical power. Thank goodness for Black Friday.

THE BBQ SONG

Here is a catchy little tune from some good ole 'Southern Boys'. It is fun and brings a little barbeque knowledge. Hope you are inspired to fire up that grill.
